Here is a super healthy bbq side dish to bring to your Memorial Day BBQ’s. I call it my fiesta summer salad! This is healthy, and all natural and so delicious!
What you will need:
- 5 ears of corn boiled or grilled with the kernels cut from the ear
- 2 cans of whole black beans
- 1 bunch of cilantro chopped
- 1 - 2 avocados cut in bite sized pieces
- 1/2 cup chopped red onion
- garlic salt to taste
- drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
Mix them all up together and you have a colorful and crisp Memorial Day salad that is not only delicious but also really good for you!

Looking back 4 years ago, I was that girl that needed 5 different sauces to dip my chicken in, tell the waiter “no peppers, onions, or tomatoes please” and thought fruit needed a little sugar on top. Thankfully with what I know today about eating healthy and the effects of sugar, I love veggies, fruit, and I’m perfectly happy with healthier “sauce” choices.
It wasn’t until this past weekend when I visited a friend in Nashville, that my mind (and taste buds) were once again enlightened! Believe it or not, I went to my first Farmers Market! Everything was so bright, fresh, and juicy looking! With Andrea by my side, the amazing person behind Liberation Kitchen blog, I learned stuff about food all weekend!

Here’s some awesomeness I learned from my first experience!
1. Local, organic and seasonal TASTES better! Since the fruits and veggies are grown locally, they are picked when perfectly ripened! Therefore, their taste is sweeter and their texture is perfect! When I tried a strawberry and my eyes popped out of my head from the sweetness, Andrea asked “you see how there isn’t a white center in the middle of it? That’s the difference between strawberries grown in good soil and then freshly picked!”

2. Healthier for you! Since the produce doesn’t have to go through miles of transportation and is usually picked that very morning, the nutrients are at their peak! You don’t even need seasoning to eat the food! I was walking around eating raw snap peas right out of the crate!

3. You know where it comes from! I never really thought about it, but it’s really nice to know exactly where you food comes from, especially because you’re putting it in YOUR body (or your family’s bodies). Knowing that someone had your health in mind instead of the shelf life of a grocery store is so comforting!

4. The price is BETTER! Believe it or not, the cost of seasonal produce is actually cheaper than some of the produce I buy at the grocery store sometimes! That’s a win-win for all!
It’s safe to say that Nashville definitely left a huge mark on my thoughts of healthy living! Farmers Markets are everywhere! For someone who plans on having kids years down the road, it’s something that I need to start taking into consideration more for my personal health and my family’s health!
Since I am still a beginner in this whole “Farmers Market Madness” I need some pointers from all of you!! What are some things you can share with me about your experience at Farmers Markets? I’d love to know!!!

Are you glued to your desk all day?
Research indicates that the body starts to slow down in as little as 30 minutes and that sitting for long periods of time decreases our metabolism, shuts off our fat burning enzymes, and can even lead to clogged arteries and heart disease. Some researchers say that constant sitting can be as bad for you as smoking!
If you didn’t have motivation to get your butt moving at work, now you do. The good news is that people who get up and move once or twice an hour can prevent these things from happening.
Here are three sure-fire moves to keep your blood flowing and your butt cheeks from bulging. You can do them anytime, anywhere, including right near your desk or while you’re on the phone. Let’s go!
1. Good Mornings
Start upright, feet shoulder-width distance apart, hands behind your head. Keeping your core engaged, hinge at the waist keeping your back flat. 15-20 reps.
2. Hip Extensions
Stand with both hips facing forward. Resist the urge to turn. Put one hand on a wall or chair for balance. Put your brain in your butt cheek as you lift right leg back – heel first. Extend as far as you can without turning your hips. Repeat with left leg. 15-20 reps.
3. Plie Squats
Start with your feet wider than shoulder-width distance apart and turn your toes out. Keeping your weight in your heels and your knees turned out, squat down and then up. Repeat. Turn it up a notch by lifting your helps us as you squat. 15-20 reps.
While at work, try to take exercise breaks every hour. These breaks can be as simple as getting up to speak to a colleague in person rather than emailing them, or getting a headset and doing your butt-burning moves while talking on the phone. And who says meetings have to be done sitting down? Why not take them on the road or to the stairwell? You can turn your one-on-ones into a walking meeting. You never know what great ideas you’ll come up with!

Everyone has their own opinion when it comes to being sore after a workout. Some love it and some never want to feel it. The soreness that you feel a day or two after a workout is called D.O.M.S or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. This is caused by, yes, that awesome workout you just put yourself through, but more specifically by little muscle microtearing that helps to build muscle fiber.
Depending on the person, it can take up 24-72 hours before you feel it and can last a couple of days! Beginners are obviously going to be more sore and for longer, but, this is NORMAL!! This is why some people love the soreness feeling because they know they were working hard enough to build more muscle (remember that muscle burns fat!!) In fact, it’s not during the exercise that your muscles are getting bigger and stronger, but after your workout.
How to increase the lean muscle building even more:
• REST! You absolutely must rest the muscles you worked for 1-2 days after a workout so the muscles can recover and build! This doesn’t make an excuse to not go to the gym at all; just work different muscle groups or focus on cardio!
• PROTEIN! Muscles are made of protein, therefore they need it! Make sure you are getting the proper amount of protein in each day and especially after your workout! Bring your shaker to the gym and have your OhYeah! Total Protein System protein powder ready to drink right after!
How to prevent as much soreness as possible (short of sitting on the couch!):
• Warm-up for at least 5-10 minutes before a workout to get your blood flowing and loosen up with your muscles.
• Drink plenty of water before and after your workout to keep you hydrated! You should be sweating a lot during your workout, so make sure to replace the amount lost! You don’t want any muscle cramps!
• STRETCH after your warm-up and after your workout so you won’t tighten up as much.
• KEEP MOVING! Go for a light walk or run the next day. The worst thing you can do is nothing at all!
Are you the type of person that likes to be sore after a workout, or rather feel nothing at all? What have you found that has kept you from getting as sore? I always love hearing your advice!!

Check out this video of me competing in the US Grappling NC State Championship in Raleigh, NC. This is my championship match in the Gi division. I took first and ended up finishing this guy with what’s called a “Bow and Arrow” choke. I was exhausted after this match (it was the end of an 8 hour day). I will be competing again in Charlotte on June 2. Come check us out!

Last weekend wasn’t only Cinco de Mayo, it was also the date of the CBVA Laguna Beach Open. While many of you were eating chips and salsa and drinking cervezas, I was drinking Gatorade and enjoying my OhYeah Chocolate Peanut Butter wafers! Lucky me! :-)
This tournament was hosted in the heart of Laguna Beach, a stone’s throw away from the waves and a hop skip and a jump to the cafes, coffee shops and surf shops that dot the Laguna coast. I played with a very good friend of mine, Lynne Brinkman Galli, who is also a Laguna native and has been the tournament champion more times than I can remember!
We started out the day in a 3 team pool with the teams of Sara Day and Morgan Beck, and Gabi Roney and Cassie Johnson. Lynne and I played great in pool play with only a few errors here and there and ended up winning all of our matches, earning us a bye in the playoffs.
Playoffs started with us beating the team of Mackenzie Brook and Dana Thompson 25-12, then moving to the semifinals to beat Emily Day and Heather Hughes 25-14.
In the finals, we were matched up against Sheila Shaw and Kathryn Babcock, a young up and coming team from Chicago who had started out the day ranked last in the tournament! The game started out very close, with each team fighting for every point. The rallies alone lasted at least 2 minutes each (which is long for beach volleyball)! However, at about 9-9, Lynne and I pushed the score in our favor by her tough serving and our defense. Eventually we finished the game 28-17!
Saturday was a truly fun day! We topped it all off with a family BBQ at la casa de Brinkman to celebrate our victory!

“Will protein shakes make me gain weight?”
This is a question I get all the time, and I am here to help you understand!! Your body needs protein. Whether you are trying to lose weight, gain muscle, or maintain your current weight; protein is second to water as the most abundant substance in your body and the primary source of building materials for muscles, blood, skin, and other organs!
Here are a few other protein facts:
So the answer is, NO! Protein shakes will not make you gain weight! If you can’t get over the protein shake—bodybuilder connection, then just call it a vanilla or chocolate smoothie! Add fruit, natural peanut butter, cinnamon, etc. on the days you can have fun with it!!
Now here is the fun {GIVEAWAY!} part: I want to know how protein shakes have helped your fitness goals and everyday life! Leave a comment with your answer and I will select one winner* who will receive 6 samples of the OhYeah! Total Protein System Powder (what I use everyday) and an OhYeah! blender bottle!

*Contest is open to U.S. residents only (it’s a shipping thing). Deadline to enter is Saturday, May 12th at 11:59 PM
I can’t wait to read everyone’s comments!!! Cheers to losing weight and staying healthy!

What a great week of workouts! There is never a day off. I am always on the grind and I hope you are too! Are you still motivated and seeing results? Remember it is not how you start or even how you are doing now. There is still time to start over and get back on track to reach your goals!
In order to see results, you must be disciplined! You must let go of some of your past ways to move forward. You can do it and I am here to encourage you along the way. Don’t forget to stock up on OhYeah! Nutrition products as you stay on track to reach your goals. I personally recommend OhYeah! Vanilla Creme Shakes and Almond Fudge Brownie Good Grab Bars. Out with April and bring on May! What I want to know is, how will you make adjustments this month to reach your goals? This goes working out, eating right, or life and business goals. Remember that in order to see results you must put forth maximum effort! How determined are you? How motivated are you?
Well as the saying goes,
“let’s stop talking about it and let’s be about it!”
Let’s make this month of May your best month yet as goals are reached and testimonies are being told to help encourage someone else. What good is it if we don’t reach back and motivate someone else? We need you to be a difference maker; stay on your grind.
I was so excited to see all those who responded by creating and naming their OhYeah Bar last week! You know I love giving away OhYeah! goods! I want to give away my favorite OhYeah! Vanilla Creme shake now, the one thing I drink after I workout to replenish my body.
To win, answer the following question in the comments:
What are you going to do in the month of May to get closer to reaching your goals?
Is it an extra day in the gym? Are you joining a summer sports league? Will you attend a business seminar? Read a motivational book? Whatever it is, let me know by the contest deadline, Friday, May 4th. I’ll select one commenter as the winner! (Open to U.S. residents only… it’s a shipping thing). I can’t wait to see your responses!
Also congrats to all the newly drafted NFL players. I encourage you to give OhYeah! a try as you all begin your off-season training.
Time to go get it!
PEACE
